Niceland: (22) Sailing

Sailing in Skjálfandi from Húsavík is the best way to watch as many whales and dolphins as possible. The “Haukur” is a very beautiful 20 tons schooner of “North Sailing” built in Reykjavík in 1973. We could see Humpback Whales and White Beaked Dolphins.

Niceland: (21) Húsavík

Húsavík is a very nice and small port village in the north coast of about 2300 inhabitants. It´s the best place in Iceland to watch whales. Besides it has a excellent whale museum, a local museum and even a Phallological Museum with many animal penis (no pictures allowed)!!. Here some images of the harbour with the boats of the two main whale watching tour agencies:

Niceland: (20) Dettifoss & Hljóðaklettar

Dettifoss is a very impressive cascade in the northeast of Iceland, with the highest volume of Europe. Not far away, Hljóðaklettar is a place with strange geological rock formations, basalt columns and caves. And gnomes i think, but i couldn´t see anyone !!

Niceland: (19) Somewhere in the middle of nowhere

Crossing the island from the east fjords to the north coast sometimes you feel like being nowhere.

Niceland: (18) Bakkagerði

After a long and foggy road from Egilsstaðir you reach Borgarfjörður Eystri and the nice small village of about 100 inhabitants of Bakkagerði. The location between mountains and the fjord is amazing. As amazing as the private red house of Lindarbakki, fully covered with sod, that seems to come out of a Hobbit´s tale. It dates from 1899 but it was completely restored before the end of the 20th century.

Niceland: (15) The factory

Are even the factories beautiful in Iceland? Well, that´s not exactly true, but with the stormy sky and the light, i found this one very interesting. Lightroom did the rest.

Niceland: (14) Djúpivogur

Djúpivogur is a tiny fishermen village located on the east fjords of Iceland.  The views, the harbour, the houses, the sheds and the fish soup are marvellous here.

Niceland: (13) South East Coast

It´s a short distance but the road between Hoffel, Hofn and Lon provides marvellous views of the landscape of the South East Coast of Iceland: small creeks, the ocean, old houses covered with grass on rocky slopes, the cliffs…

Niceland: (12) Some icebergs

The icebergs in Jökulsárlón remain floating for years inside the lagoon till they completely melt or reach the exit to the ocean.

Niceland: (11) Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon

In my opinion, Jökulsárlón is the most amazing place in Iceland. An outstanding landscape! It´s a glacier lagoon full of floating icebergs that were once forming part of the glacier Breiðamerkurjökull, part of the enormous Vatnajökull. The lagoon is 17Km long and 600m deep and it´s open to the ocean by an small exit. It´s been the location of several films like Tomb Rider and James Bond´s “Die another day”, when it was completely frozen as they closed the entrance of salted water from the ocean.

Niceland: (10) A walk on the glacier

Walk on the Svínafellsjökull glacier tongue, part of the Vatnajökull glacier (the biggest ice field in the world a part from the Poles). Despite the black ash over the ice deposited by a volcanic explosion, the scenery and views were simply stunning. We walk through a wonderland of glacial ice sculptures, meandering through ice ridges and the deep crevasses of the glacier. Crampons and ice axes required.

Niceland: (9) Moss fields… forever

Driving the ring road east from VíK and near Kirkjubaerjarklaustur you can find vast extensions of lava fields from the Laki volcano eruption of 1783 completely covered with green moss. Don´t know how thick the moss is, but it´s very spongy !
